Ethiopia Dara Sidama Shilcho

Dara is sub region within the province of Sidama (also written Sidamo), Shiicho is the washing station and cooperative. Shilcho was founded in 1976 and currently has 2,200 individual farmer members. The word Shilcho translates roughly to “tastes good” in the local Sidama language. The cooperative belongs to a larger organization, the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU) which provides export services, credit support, technical assistance, certification management, and other social services. The SCFCU is actually the second largest cooperative union in the country and serves as an umbrella for 45 individual coops representing more than 82,000 farmers. It has been around since 2001 and is one of the most successful coops in Ethiopia.
